 <title>KM Project Assistance (University of Edinburgh)</title>

&lt;p&gt;First of all, forgive me for not addressing this to you individually.  I&lt;br /&gt;
am getting in touch with relevant people, via forums, to ask if&lt;br /&gt;
you would consider contributing to the University of Edinburgh Global KM&lt;br /&gt;
survey 2011.  We really need your help and we are into the final ten&lt;br /&gt;
days for responses.  If you have already contributed, thank you.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;If not, we have had 300+ responses from companies such as Shell; AIG:&lt;br /&gt;
BAe; UK police forces; world wide armed forces; AstraZeneca; Fujitsu;&lt;br /&gt;
Worldbank; Redcross; MITRE; PWC; Deloitte; Microsoft; and top worldwide&lt;br /&gt;

We&amp;#39;re not the only ones, this article in The Hindu, an interview with Sandhya Shekhar, the CEO of the Chennai-based IIT Madras Research Park, shows that people are talking about the same things, but the way to operationalise the &amp;quot;weaving&amp;quot; or integration of KM within the wider organisation is not necessarily clear - It is almost like an ideal, something we talk about without being sure of how to actually do it.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>The critical function of KM</title>

&lt;p&gt;The functions of KM: creating; capturing &amp;amp; storing and sharing are&lt;br /&gt;
perhaps just the enablers of what really matters – application. Rather&lt;br /&gt;
than being something solid, reliable and final, we’re better thinking of&lt;br /&gt;
knowledge as conjecture being constantly tested and retested. So KM is&lt;br /&gt;
really about people and organisational effectiveness and improvement.&lt;br /&gt;
Improvement is key here as the application of knowledge is the process&lt;br /&gt;
of testing and retesting in different situations and contexts. Effective&lt;br /&gt;
KM is about ensuring that the organisation is building on what it is&lt;br /&gt;
good at, that the application of work practices is constantly refined&lt;br /&gt;
and reflected on, captured, disseminated (by whatever mechanisms work at&lt;br /&gt;
the time) and used in day-to-day practice. &lt;/p&gt;

 <title>Knowledge Leak?  Don&#039;t put a thumb in it, KM it!</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;Hello all, this is the intro to our latest blog along with a link to the full article if you are interested... &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I’ve often blogged about the complexities of KM and the need to treat&lt;br /&gt;
KM activity in a holistic way, but what about some of the micro-KM&lt;br /&gt;
activities?  This blog looks at a specific issue for KM, succession&lt;br /&gt;
planning, and reveals the depth of complexity that our (KM) activities&lt;br /&gt;
encompass as we pull in complimentary concepts to solve our problems.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;What do a Scottish police force, a major US pharmaceutical and a Middle East gas company all have in common?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Okay, yes, we have or are working with them on KM projects, but beside that…&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;They are all preparing to lose a significant percentage of their&lt;br /&gt;
senior management or executive management team to retirement in the next&lt;br /&gt;
five to six years. The other thing they have in common, they didn’t&lt;br /&gt;
have a plan to capture their knowledge before they exited the company –&lt;br /&gt;
basically, forget a knowledge-leak, they are facing the potential stream&lt;br /&gt;
of knowledge loss.  How many&lt;br /&gt;
of you, reading this, have plans in place to capture the knowledge of&lt;br /&gt;
your staff as the age out of the company – to say nothing of&lt;br /&gt;
forced-redundancy brought about as organisations ‘right-size’ to meet&lt;br /&gt;
the challenges of the current economic climate?  You don’t know&lt;br /&gt;
what crisis is around the corner or which member of staff will walk out&lt;br /&gt;
of your company for the last time today, their knowledge lost forever,&lt;br /&gt;
or, worse still, they sell their personal capital, and their knowledge&lt;br /&gt;
along with it, to your competitors.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Scare mongering?  You might say that this happens all the time and&lt;br /&gt;
that it is impossible to legislate against ever scenario that could&lt;br /&gt;
contribute to knowledge leakage or loss.  You’re right, of course. &lt;br /&gt;
However, you can work to minimise your risk and you can plan to embed&lt;br /&gt;
the knowledge of people that are ‘aging out’ of the organisation or&lt;br /&gt;
vital operational knowledge that exists within a limited pool of&lt;br /&gt;
people.  KM has a role to play here and, by the way, there isn’t an IT&lt;br /&gt;
solution to manage you out of this one, this is about people processes&lt;br /&gt;
and developing a framework where people are motivated to share and&lt;br /&gt;
absorb the knowledge-giving being afforded to them.  One aspect of the&lt;br /&gt;
solution is succession planning, which requires you to work with HR&lt;br /&gt;
partners to justify a KM intervention.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;NZKM invite you to a presentation by Richard Boag on the misuse of IT in the workplace. Richard will look at what the real issues are, the impact on organisations and what are the methods being used to counter it. He draws from a range of expert international sources and independent research to highlight the true scope of the problem and the relevant effectiveness of the IT tools that have been developed in this area. This will include a look at the impact on organisations in terms of social networking and productivity. With his HR Management background Richard will also bring a policy and management viewpoint to the topic, not just a technical overview. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Richard is currently involved with two business projects: Evtech NZ that has the New Zealand rights to the ScreenShield suite of e-safety products and Reading Projects that is introducing the ULTra transport system to New Zealand. Previously he has been involved with projects with Wellington Cricket, New Zealand International Sevens, Westpac Stadium, Wellington City Millennium Project and local authority elections.&lt;/p&gt;

The assignment will be based in Wellington however the role will influence offices in Auckland and Christchurch.  <title>Matt Moore - Performance Enhancing</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;&quot;In 2003, the knowledge management group I worked in was merged with the learning team. As with all mergers, the first meeting was, er, interesting. Each group across from the other. Someone from the other side of the table spoke up: &#039;You do something with databases, don&#039;t you?&#039; They didn&#039;t know what we did. We didn&#039;t know what they did. It proved to be fun, and sometimes painful, finding out.&quot;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Matt Moore has spent the last decade working in knowledge management, learning and internal communications. His first book, Performance Enhancing, is an attempt to make sense of those experiences. This session explores a selection themes in the book:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;- What are the opportunities when knowledge managers and training professionals work together?&lt;br /&gt;
- What are the key issues around strategy, staffing, methods and technology?&lt;br /&gt;
- What can we do next?&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>Practical application of Cognitive Edge methods in the Victorian Public Service</title>

&lt;p&gt;The NZKM Network is pleased to introduce Laurel Sutton to share her learning&amp;#39;s, frustrations and insights on using Dave Snowden&amp;#39;s Cognitive Edge methods at two recent workshops in Victoria. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The Victorian Public Service Continuous Improvement Network (VPSCIN) exists to encourage and promote continuous improvement thought leadership and practice, and in doing so help build a more effective and agile Public Sector. VPSCIN recently ran two workshops using the Cognitive Edge methods. One workshop mapped the issues related to engaging with the community on climate change and the other focused on innovation within the Victorian Public Service. The sessions were facilitated by a number of recently accredited practitioners in Cognitive Edge methods. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Laurel is hoping that the conversation with the NZKM Network will be a mutual learning experience. Laurel is a Project Manager with Victoria Police. Her background is within the mental health field as a clinician. This is augmented by post graduate qualifications in organisation behaviour which all comes together nicely in terms of a people focused approach in organisations. &lt;/p&gt;

Social networking and online communities have received significant attention in the past 12 months, as services such as Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn attract and connect communities of people. This workshop will be run by KM and sense making pioneer Dave Snowden.

The workshop will involve three single day courses that, taken as a whole provideaccreditation to, and permit membership of, the Cognitive Edge Network.Participants will gain an understanding of the principles and practiceof naturalising sensemaking to organisational issues. If you want todiscover pragmatic ways to manage under conditions of uncertainty,understand the power of business narrative and discover new ways to usehuman networks then this course will equip you with the core theory&amp;amp; associated methods.

&lt;p&gt;
Cognitive Edge is creating an approach to management &amp;amp; socialscience by applying insights and understanding from the naturalsciences, in particular complex adaptive systems theory, the cognitivesciences and a range of techniques from disciplines such asanthropology.
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;
While offering a range of novel, science based methods, the approachincludes the principle of bounded applicability. Different tools andtechniques work within different contexts, no one approach can claimuniversal applicability. Methods taught on the course are fullysupported by open source methods and attendance qualifies participantsto use theSenseMaker™ software suite on projects.

 <description>&lt;p&gt;Diane Edwards, one of our NZKM national executive, will be in Auckland next Monday and will be talking about her latest KM project, with Citizens Advice Bureau. She will also be interested to hear what others in the group think about the project and to discuss some of the issues and possible approaches given the various constraints. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This needs must be an after work event here at Tonkin &amp;amp; Taylor, anytime from 5.00pm onwards, for a 5.30pm start. Anyone arriving after that time will need to ring me (021 805102) so I can come down and let you in.
