KM Project Assistance (University of Edinburgh)

Hello all,

First of all, forgive me for not addressing this to you individually. I
am getting in touch with relevant people, via forums, to ask if
you would consider contributing to the University of Edinburgh Global KM
survey 2011. We really need your help and we are into the final ten
days for responses. If you have already contributed, thank you.

If not, we have had 300+ responses from companies such as Shell; AIG:
BAe; UK police forces; world wide armed forces; AstraZeneca; Fujitsu;
Worldbank; Redcross; MITRE; PWC; Deloitte; Microsoft; and top worldwide
KM consultants...to name a few

The survey is complex and will take about 30 minutes to complete; we
have also had feedback that it challenges your KM thought process. We
realise that your time is valuable and 30 minutes is a big commitment on
your part, but we need to provide you with a depth of findings that can
contribute to the improvement of practice in your organisation.

To thank you for your time, we will provide you a free copy of the
report, which will retail for £295.00 and will be available for first
quarter 2012. Your contribution will enable you to compare and contrast
your practice against others from similar size organisations/geographic
location/sector

Survey link:
https://www.survey.ed.ac.uk/kmoglobal2011

I just want to say, thank you in advance if you are able to help us. We
are excited by the preliminary findings, but we also know that its
value will be down to the contribution of people like yourselves.

Thank you again,

David

Thinking Styles: KM would be easy if everyone thought alike!

NZKM is proud to present two sessions with innovation expert, Ed Bernacki. He believes that our style of thinking (or cognitive style) influences the degree to which we prefer to work with tacit or explicit knowledge. This preference influences the type and degree of knowledge use when doing our jobs. These differences in the way people think and use knowledge are a diversity that should be harnessed to shape more innovative organisations.

There are many facets of knowledge management. Our ability to develop KM strategies would be fairly easy if all people thought alike. Yet it’s naive to believe that people think alike. This begs some interesting questions:

How should we see these differences?

What are the implications of these differences?

How can we predict the type of information people will prefer to work with?

Can our style of thinking bias our recommendations?

There is much evidence to suggest that thinking style (or cognitive style) influences the degree to which we prefer to work with tacit or explicit knowledge. This preference can influence the type and degree of knowledge use when doing our jobs. These differences in the way people think and use knowledge are a diversity that should be harnessed to shape more innovative organisations.
NZKM Members free, Non-members $20.
Drinks and nibbles will be available.
Please RSVP to Treasurer@nzkm.net

Note: The Wellington session only will be preceded by the NZKM AGM where highlights of the year will be reported and officers and committee members will be elected. For further details, click on the AGM tab at the NZKM home page http://nzkm.net/agm-2011

About Ed Bernacki

Ed Bernacki is an international speaker and author. He created The Idea Factory to help people in our organizations be more innovative. He provides a “jargon free” experience through his workshops and briefings. He has designed this session to prompt our thinking about the importance of managing ideas and knowledge throughout an organization. He is currently based in Melbourne where he is starting the long process of working on a PhD in innovation in the service sectors.Ed Bernacki spent 10 years in New Zealand after earning his MBA from Otago. He is the innovation columnist for Unlimited Magazine.

Getting KM right! (4 functions and 12 constructs)

Excerpt from the blog - please follow this link to the full article if you are interested :

For a while now we have talked about the need to manage the 'whole' KM process. We're not the only ones, this article in The Hindu, an interview with Sandhya Shekhar, the CEO of the Chennai-based IIT Madras Research Park, shows that people are talking about the same things, but the way to operationalise the "weaving" or integration of KM within the wider organisation is not necessarily clear - It is almost like an ideal, something we talk about without being sure of how to actually do it.

Sounds like a challenge...

So, what do we mean and where's the evidence?

Cutting through the jargon and the hype, this is it. First the evidence process...with links to our other blog posts to help bring some extra context to what we're discussing

Wellington

The critical function of KM

This week’s blog is a conversation with Peter Evans (K3-Cubed Director) and comes from an ongoing dialogue on the critical functions of KM. Pete puts the case forward for knowledge usage…

The functions of KM: creating; capturing & storing and sharing are
perhaps just the enablers of what really matters – application. Rather
than being something solid, reliable and final, we’re better thinking of
knowledge as conjecture being constantly tested and retested. So KM is
really about people and organisational effectiveness and improvement.
Improvement is key here as the application of knowledge is the process
of testing and retesting in different situations and contexts. Effective
KM is about ensuring that the organisation is building on what it is
good at, that the application of work practices is constantly refined
and reflected on, captured, disseminated (by whatever mechanisms work at
the time) and used in day-to-day practice.

If this is of interest the full conversation can be found here

Knowledge Leak? Don't put a thumb in it, KM it!

Hello all, this is the intro to our latest blog along with a link to the full article if you are interested...

I’ve often blogged about the complexities of KM and the need to treat
KM activity in a holistic way, but what about some of the micro-KM
activities? This blog looks at a specific issue for KM, succession
planning, and reveals the depth of complexity that our (KM) activities
encompass as we pull in complimentary concepts to solve our problems.

What do a Scottish police force, a major US pharmaceutical and a Middle East gas company all have in common?

Okay, yes, we have or are working with them on KM projects, but beside that…

They are all preparing to lose a significant percentage of their
senior management or executive management team to retirement in the next
five to six years. The other thing they have in common, they didn’t
have a plan to capture their knowledge before they exited the company –
basically, forget a knowledge-leak, they are facing the potential stream
of knowledge loss. How many
of you, reading this, have plans in place to capture the knowledge of
your staff as the age out of the company – to say nothing of
forced-redundancy brought about as organisations ‘right-size’ to meet
the challenges of the current economic climate? You don’t know
what crisis is around the corner or which member of staff will walk out
of your company for the last time today, their knowledge lost forever,
or, worse still, they sell their personal capital, and their knowledge
along with it, to your competitors.

Scare mongering? You might say that this happens all the time and
that it is impossible to legislate against ever scenario that could
contribute to knowledge leakage or loss. You’re right, of course.
However, you can work to minimise your risk and you can plan to embed
the knowledge of people that are ‘aging out’ of the organisation or
vital operational knowledge that exists within a limited pool of
people. KM has a role to play here and, by the way, there isn’t an IT
solution to manage you out of this one, this is about people processes
and developing a framework where people are motivated to share and
absorb the knowledge-giving being afforded to them. One aspect of the
solution is succession planning, which requires you to work with HR
partners to justify a KM intervention.

If this interests you, please follow the link to the full blog...

Free KM report - The University of Edinburgh Knowledge Management Observatory™ Global 2011 Survey

Hello all,

We have been engaging with companies in Asia Pacific, but it is not often that we get the opportunity to interact with KMers from New Zealand.

The 2011 Global survey takes 25-30 mins to complete and is seen as a challenging and rewarding exercise - All participants will receive a pre-publication copy of the full findings.

http://theknowledgecore.wordpress.com/2011/03/23/the-knowledge-managemen...

Please follow the link and we hope to hear your opinions.

Kind regards,

Attending the masterclass isn't just a good idea ... it's essential to
your success with SharePoint going forward. Here's the top 8 reasons to
attend:

SharePoint doesn't usually fail because of the technology, but
rather the business and human reasons. You'll learn the roadmap to
success.

The workshop provides a rapid infusion of ideas and concepts for you
to apply immediately. What you'll learn in a day has taken others
months and years to master.

You will become much better able to make SharePoint succeed in your
organisation. The masterclass will benefit your career!

You will have the opportunity to meet others from Wellington in the
SharePoint space, compare experiences, and gain deeper insight into
common challenges. You are not alone!

Take away reading material to help you capture and apply what you
learnt during the masterclass.

Hear real-world case studies from other organisations using
SharePoint for collaboration, and how they approach the business and
human factors.

This is the only time for the rest of 2010 that you will be able to
attend a public masterclass in New Zealand.

The masterclass isn't a sales pitch for SharePoint. It's a success
pitch for you and your organisation.

Dave Snowden - "Leading Through Complexity" executive seminar

Leading Through Complexity Executive Seminar

The challenge of doing more with less is ever present in both the public and private sectors. In the 1980s the big idea was process management and re-engineering, replacing the functionally oriented structures of the preceeding decades. Over the years those ideas have achieved significant results, but they no longer offer the opportunity for radical and progressive change and are in danger of becoming over extended and over complicated.

The Leading Through Complexity one-day executive seminar, led by Dave Snowden and based on his award-winning work, is designed to introduce participants to radical new ways to:

- focus on sustainability, using the natural capabilities of customers, citizens and staff;
- shift from fail-safe design to a more flexible and adaptive process of safe-fail experiments leading to more resilient outcomes;
- use the distributed intelligence of workforces and markets to transform decision making and achieve long term effectiveness
see strategy as a constantly evolving articulation of emergent possibilities, shorting decision cycles, increasing robustness;
- and understand the new simplicity inherent in an ecological approach to management.

NZKM has arranged a special pricing offer with Cognitive Edge which entitles NZKM affiliates to a 10% discount off the headline price.

Please respond to Dawn Lincoln on dawn.lincoln@cognitive-edge.com stating your affiliation with the NZKM Network with your registration/inquiry.

Matt Moore - Performance Enhancing (Wellington)

Date: 19th May 2010, 5:30 - 7pm
Location: Level 7, Intergen House, 126 Lambton Quay, Wellington

NZKM invite you to an evening with Matt Moore.

"In 2003, the knowledge management group I worked in was merged with the learning team. As with all mergers, the first meeting was, er, interesting. Each group across from the other. Someone from the other side of the table spoke up: 'You do something with databases, don't you?' They didn't know what we did. We didn't know what they did. It proved to be fun, and sometimes painful, finding out."

Matt Moore has spent the last decade working in knowledge management, learning and internal communications. His first book, Performance Enhancing, is an attempt to make sense of those experiences. This session explores a selection themes in the book:

- What are the opportunities when knowledge managers and training professionals work together?
- What are the key issues around strategy, staffing, methods and technology?
- What can we do next?

The session will be as interactive as possible - with Matt posing questions as well as answering them.

Matt is Chair of the New South Wales KM Forum in Australia, he has lectured in E-earning Design at University of Technology Sydney and is a director of Innotecture. Matt has worked with organisations such as PwC, IBM, Oracle and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. His company blog can be found here: http://innotecture.wordpress.com/

Impact of tacit knowledge sharing enablers on organisational effectiveness: a conceptual model

Date & Time: 28 Apr 2010 - 12:00 - 13:00Location: Level 7, Intergen House, 126 Lambton Quay, Wellington NZKM invites you to attend a lunchtime event presented by Salman Iqbal (PhD student), Dr. Paul Toulson (Associate Prof.) and Dr. David Tweed (Senior lecturer) from the College of Business, Department of Management at Massey University. The discussion will be based on an article recently presented at a conference in Singapore on tacit knowledge sharing practises and organisational effectiveness. The sharing of tacit knowledge within an organisation has been shown to have a positive relationship with organisational effectiveness. The conceptual model presented by Salman and his PhD supervisors suggests that organisational culture through employees collaboration, multidisciplinary teamwork and management support are positively related to tacit knowledge sharing practices. Information technology supports knowledge sharing practises by integrating and applying knowledge which is already embedded in employees across organisation.Attendance for members is free and non members will be charged $10 at the door. Please RSVP to secretary@nzkm.net

Knowledge Brokering

This McKinsey article proposes that open innovation is transforming the way companies develop new products, with benefit realisation around exposing internal R&D to outside ideas. It describes how some organisations are applying open-source thinking to improve a range of core business processes. Organisations are adopting the practice of 'knowledge brokering', a systematic approach to seeking external ideas from people in a variety of industries, disciplines, and contexts and then of combining the resulting lessons in new ways.

The Article takes a closer look at the way organisations use knowledge brokering to improve their business processes, offering practical lessons for adapting to a digital era characterised by increased collaboration.

reminder: Michael Sampson's Masterclass in SharePoint Collaboration & Governance

Hi all,

Just a note that there are still some places left for Michael Sampson's Masterclass in SharePoint Collaboration & Governance.

Michael recently delivered this workshop in Singapore with great success, and will be presenting it in Melbourne next year.

Date: 24 Nov 2009 - 09:00 - 17:30

Location: Quality Hotel, 223 Cuba Street, Wellington

More information:
http://www.smartnet.co.nz/events/other/michaelsampson.htm

In this masterclass, collaboration and SharePoint expert Michael Sampson will take you through the steps required to make collaboration a success inside your organization.
Knowledge and Information Sharing (KIS) : the hidden differentiator : Grant Margison from Information Leadership

Getting good at KIS is a key but often hidden differentiator of excellent organisations. Being great at KIS lowers business risk, raises productivity and innovation, and helps to attract and retain top flight talent. This presentation highlights why most organisations find gaining and keeping KIS competency so difficult. It provides a proven methodology that you can use to diagnose your current state and guide your future actions - bring together the right mix of technology, governance content and people power. As an added bonus, this presentation is illustrated with real examples from Information Leadership’s own business – find out how they capture, manage and leverage their own knowledge.

This event is on Thursday the 26th of November at the Holiday Inn, 75 Featherston Street, Wellington. It starts at 5pm with Grant's talk, and will be followed by drinks and nibbles.

The event is free of charge, but preference will be given to paid NZKM members. Please RSVP to secretary@nzkm.net as places are limited.

About Information Leadership

Information Leadership is one of NZ's largest and most respected information and knowledge management consultancy. Having worked over the last five years with over 100 NZ and Australian organisations covering Education, Health, Science, Utilities, Engineering, Local and Central Government, Information Leadership brings together a unique blend of skills in information technologies, change management, records management and knowledge replication.

Grant Margison regularly consults for a range of clients in the public and corporate sectors. He assists organisations in making the right IT choices and helps engage entire organisations to ensure that IT projects succeed. Grant has an engineering degree and diploma in business. While in senior management positions at Enerco, Southpower and Counties Power, Grant helped these companies to gain business advantage and service improvement through the successful use of new technologies.

He has developed information and IT strategies and products, mobile data implementations and asset management business planning. He is a regular conference speaker in NZ and overseas.

Masterclass in SharePoint Collaboration & Governance with Michael Sampson

In this masterclass, collaboration and SharePoint guru Michael Sampson will take you through the steps required to make collaboration a success inside your organization.

Knowledge-based work, as we’re finally realising, is collaborative in nature. This is the primary reason we’re seeing a rush to implement collaboration applications inside the enterprise. But just installing an application does not mean that the magic we want will happen. It requires proper thinking, planning and governing to make collaboration work.

Michael Sampson is a Collaboration Strategist. He helps end-user organizations in New Zealand, Australia, the United States, Europe and other places around the world improve the performance of distributed teams.

Michael holds an MCom with first class honors in telecommunications-based IT, from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, and is working on his doctorate in collaborative applications and virtual teams. Michael lives in New Zealand with his glorious wife and nine children.

The Parallel Bang: Non-Linear Thinking in a Non-Linear World

NZKM, with co-sponsors Intergen and SmartNet invite you to a presentation by NASA engineer Dr Jack Bacon, speaking about the Parallel Bang and what it means for organisations, our community, our society and our world.

Dr Bacon is one of the world's most popular speakers on technology and the factors that shape human society. In his daily work, he is on the management team overseeing the construction and operation of the most complicated technical project in history: the International Space Station. He is the author of three popular books; My Grandfathers' Clock, My Stepdaughter's Watch and The Parallel Bang. More on Dr Jack Bacon.

Members free and non members $10. Please RSVP to chairman@nzkm.net

What does the Parallel Bang mean to your organisation, our community, our society and our world?

World economics, work, education and leisure are being transformed before our very eyes. In the last decade, we've tripled our knowledge of astronomy, pinpointed the age and size of the cosmos, counted its galaxies, and found the theory that will link all known physics of the universe. The patent rate has more than doubled. We've decoded out genome. We've doubled our life expectancy. We've changed the workforce and the workweek. We've engineered machines a few atoms in size. More than two thirds of the citizens of the western world are now linked to the Internet.

Futurist, technological historian and engineer Dr Jack Bacon presents a compelling vision that human thought - which houses the parallel universe of all the models of the physical universe - is undergoing an explosive new phase of development not unlike the surge that occurred in the Renaissance. This time, however, it's taking less than a decade, and it's on an exponential trajectory that will take humanity to amazing new heights. In these few thousand days we're living through something of astounding significance as computing, communications, medicine, psychology, politics, transportation, agriculture, and world economics all "throw on the afterburners."

Fasten your seatbelt and prepare for the explosive growth of understanding in the 21st century.

NZKM invite you to a presentation by Graham Durant-Law joining us from Australia to present the early results of his PhD entitled ‘Visualising Collective Knowledge to Manage Complexity in a Portfolio of Projects’. Graham will discuss with us the role of a network relationship approach, how it can add to the armoury of project managers, and offer a means to effectively manage a program or portfolio of projects.
Invitation to Graham Durant-Law presentation network relationship approach and NZKM AGM

Such an approach offers project, program, and portfolio managers the ability to quantitatively, qualitatively, and visually manage their project or projects. For more information on Graham, please review his biography (http://www.durantlaw.info/Biography). This presentation will follow our annual AGM.
NZKM Network Brown Bag Lunch

Brown Bags are informal lunchtime networking sessions. These sessions do not have a designated speaker or a set topic. Instead, they are an opportunity to meet and network with fellow professionals around topics of knowledge management.

Really, we decide what we want to talk about during the session. In the past, we’ve discussed current projects, information practices, recent events or articles, ways of dealing with difficult situations, etc. All current members are welcome.

If you would like to attend this session, please email alex.natelli@intergen.co.nz (and don’t forget to bring yourself something to eat).

4th Annual Information Law Conference

The 4th annual LexisNexis Information Law conference provides practitioners with an essential update and practical guide to all issues relevant to the law of information.

With an increasing number of Official Information Act requests, it is vital for all government departments that your processes for responding to these requests are streamlined and effective. They must also be robust enough to respond to the most complex claims, being careful not to release information where there is reason to withhold and making decisions that will be able to withstand Ombudsmen scrutiny.

In addition to the demands created by the OIA, government departments and practitioners are also faced with challenges in the privacy field and in 2010 will be faced with the public records audit.

Auckland
