KM Project Assistance (University of Edinburgh)

Hello all,

First of all, forgive me for not addressing this to you individually. I
am getting in touch with relevant people, via forums, to ask if
you would consider contributing to the University of Edinburgh Global KM
survey 2011. We really need your help and we are into the final ten
days for responses. If you have already contributed, thank you.

If not, we have had 300+ responses from companies such as Shell; AIG:
BAe; UK police forces; world wide armed forces; AstraZeneca; Fujitsu;
Worldbank; Redcross; MITRE; PWC; Deloitte; Microsoft; and top worldwide
KM consultants...to name a few

The survey is complex and will take about 30 minutes to complete; we
have also had feedback that it challenges your KM thought process. We
realise that your time is valuable and 30 minutes is a big commitment on
your part, but we need to provide you with a depth of findings that can
contribute to the improvement of practice in your organisation.

To thank you for your time, we will provide you a free copy of the
report, which will retail for £295.00 and will be available for first
quarter 2012. Your contribution will enable you to compare and contrast
your practice against others from similar size organisations/geographic
location/sector

Survey link:
https://www.survey.ed.ac.uk/kmoglobal2011

I just want to say, thank you in advance if you are able to help us. We
are excited by the preliminary findings, but we also know that its
value will be down to the contribution of people like yourselves.

Thank you again,

David

Thinking Styles: KM would be easy if everyone thought alike!

NZKM is proud to present two sessions with innovation expert, Ed Bernacki. He believes that our style of thinking (or cognitive style) influences the degree to which we prefer to work with tacit or explicit knowledge. This preference influences the type and degree of knowledge use when doing our jobs. These differences in the way people think and use knowledge are a diversity that should be harnessed to shape more innovative organisations.

There are many facets of knowledge management. Our ability to develop KM strategies would be fairly easy if all people thought alike. Yet it’s naive to believe that people think alike. This begs some interesting questions:

How should we see these differences?

What are the implications of these differences?

How can we predict the type of information people will prefer to work with?

Can our style of thinking bias our recommendations?

There is much evidence to suggest that thinking style (or cognitive style) influences the degree to which we prefer to work with tacit or explicit knowledge. This preference can influence the type and degree of knowledge use when doing our jobs. These differences in the way people think and use knowledge are a diversity that should be harnessed to shape more innovative organisations.

NZKM Members free, Non-members $20.

Drinks and nibbles will be available.

Please RSVP to Treasurer@nzkm.net

About Ed Bernacki

Ed Bernacki is an international speaker and author. He created The Idea Factory to help people in our organizations be more innovative. He provides a “jargon free” experience through his workshops and briefings. He has designed this session to prompt our thinking about the importance of managing ideas and knowledge throughout an organization. He is currently based in Melbourne where he is starting the long process of working on a PhD in innovation in the service sectors.Ed Bernacki spent 10 years in New Zealand after earning his MBA from Otago. He is the innovation columnist for Unlimited Magazine.

Getting KM right! (4 functions and 12 constructs)

Excerpt from the blog - please follow this link to the full article if you are interested :

For a while now we have talked about the need to manage the 'whole' KM process. We're not the only ones, this article in The Hindu, an interview with Sandhya Shekhar, the CEO of the Chennai-based IIT Madras Research Park, shows that people are talking about the same things, but the way to operationalise the "weaving" or integration of KM within the wider organisation is not necessarily clear - It is almost like an ideal, something we talk about without being sure of how to actually do it.

Sounds like a challenge...

So, what do we mean and where's the evidence?

Cutting through the jargon and the hype, this is it. First the evidence process...with links to our other blog posts to help bring some extra context to what we're discussing

Wellington

The critical function of KM

This week’s blog is a conversation with Peter Evans (K3-Cubed Director) and comes from an ongoing dialogue on the critical functions of KM. Pete puts the case forward for knowledge usage…

The functions of KM: creating; capturing & storing and sharing are
perhaps just the enablers of what really matters – application. Rather
than being something solid, reliable and final, we’re better thinking of
knowledge as conjecture being constantly tested and retested. So KM is
really about people and organisational effectiveness and improvement.
Improvement is key here as the application of knowledge is the process
of testing and retesting in different situations and contexts. Effective
KM is about ensuring that the organisation is building on what it is
good at, that the application of work practices is constantly refined
and reflected on, captured, disseminated (by whatever mechanisms work at
the time) and used in day-to-day practice.

If this is of interest the full conversation can be found here

Knowledge Leak? Don't put a thumb in it, KM it!

Hello all, this is the intro to our latest blog along with a link to the full article if you are interested...

I’ve often blogged about the complexities of KM and the need to treat
KM activity in a holistic way, but what about some of the micro-KM
activities? This blog looks at a specific issue for KM, succession
planning, and reveals the depth of complexity that our (KM) activities
encompass as we pull in complimentary concepts to solve our problems.

What do a Scottish police force, a major US pharmaceutical and a Middle East gas company all have in common?

Okay, yes, we have or are working with them on KM projects, but beside that…

They are all preparing to lose a significant percentage of their
senior management or executive management team to retirement in the next
five to six years. The other thing they have in common, they didn’t
have a plan to capture their knowledge before they exited the company –
basically, forget a knowledge-leak, they are facing the potential stream
of knowledge loss. How many
of you, reading this, have plans in place to capture the knowledge of
your staff as the age out of the company – to say nothing of
forced-redundancy brought about as organisations ‘right-size’ to meet
the challenges of the current economic climate? You don’t know
what crisis is around the corner or which member of staff will walk out
of your company for the last time today, their knowledge lost forever,
or, worse still, they sell their personal capital, and their knowledge
along with it, to your competitors.

Scare mongering? You might say that this happens all the time and
that it is impossible to legislate against ever scenario that could
contribute to knowledge leakage or loss. You’re right, of course.
However, you can work to minimise your risk and you can plan to embed
the knowledge of people that are ‘aging out’ of the organisation or
vital operational knowledge that exists within a limited pool of
people. KM has a role to play here and, by the way, there isn’t an IT
solution to manage you out of this one, this is about people processes
and developing a framework where people are motivated to share and
absorb the knowledge-giving being afforded to them. One aspect of the
solution is succession planning, which requires you to work with HR
partners to justify a KM intervention.

If this interests you, please follow the link to the full blog...

Hello all,

We have been engaging with companies in Asia Pacific, but it is not often that we get the opportunity to interact with KMers from New Zealand.

The 2011 Global survey takes 25-30 mins to complete and is seen as a challenging and rewarding exercise - All participants will receive a pre-publication copy of the full findings.

Please follow the link and we hope to hear your opinions.

NZKM: AGM 2010 and presentation on the misuse of IT in the workplace

Apologies for cross-posting.

Date: 8 Jul 2009, 12:00 - 13:30
Location: Archives New Zealand Training Room, 10 Mulgrave Street, Wellington

NZKM invite you to a presentation by Richard Boag on the misuse of IT in the workplace. Richard will look at what the real issues are, the impact on organisations and what are the methods being used to counter it. He draws from a range of expert international sources and independent research to highlight the true scope of the problem and the relevant effectiveness of the IT tools that have been developed in this area. This will include a look at the impact on organisations in terms of social networking and productivity. With his HR Management background Richard will also bring a policy and management viewpoint to the topic, not just a technical overview.

Richard is currently involved with two business projects: Evtech NZ that has the New Zealand rights to the ScreenShield suite of e-safety products and Reading Projects that is introducing the ULTra transport system to New Zealand. Previously he has been involved with projects with Wellington Cricket, New Zealand International Sevens, Westpac Stadium, Wellington City Millennium Project and local authority elections.

This presentation will follow our annual AGM. More details on the AGM will be available on the website shortly, including the process to nominate Management Committee members and instructions for proxy votes.

Members free and non members $10. Please RSVP to treasurer@nzkm.net

NZKM - reminder: Masterclass in SharePoint Collaboration & Governance with Michael Sampson

Hi all,

Just a note that there are still some places left for Michael Sampson's Masterclass in SharePoint Collaboration & Governance.

Michael recently delivered this workshop in Singapore with great success, and will be presenting it in Melbourne next year.

Date: 26 Nov 2009 - 09:00 - 17:30

Location: Lukey Resources, 236 Manchester St, Christchurch

More information:

http://www.smartnet.co.nz/events/other/michaelsampson.htm

In
this masterclass, collaboration and SharePoint guru Michael Sampson
will take you through the steps required to make collaboration a
success inside your organization.

Knowledge-based work, as we’re finally realising, is collaborative
in nature. This is the primary reason we’re seeing a rush to implement
collaboration applications inside the enterprise. But just installing
an application does not mean that the magic we want will happen. It
requires proper thinking, planning and governing to make collaboration
work.

Michael Sampson is a Collaboration Strategist. He helps end-user
organizations in New Zealand, Australia, the United States, Europe and
other places around the world improve the performance of distributed
teams.

Michael holds an MCom with first class honors in
telecommunications-based IT, from the University of Canterbury in New
Zealand, and is working on his doctorate in collaborative applications
and virtual teams. Michael lives in New Zealand with his glorious wife
and nine children.

Michael is the author of the widely acclaimed books:

Seamless Teamwork: Using SharePoint for Collaboration (Microsoft Press)

SharePoint Roadmap for Collaboration (published by Michael Sampson)

To register go to:
http://www.smartnet.co.nz/events/other/michaelsampson.htm

Mention NZKM to get a 10% discount.

Knowledge and Information Sharing (KIS) : the hidden differentiator : Grant Margison from Information Leadership

Getting good at KIS is a key but often hidden differentiator of excellent organisations. Being great at KIS lowers business risk, raises productivity and innovation, and helps to attract and retain top flight talent. This presentation highlights why most organisations find gaining and keeping KIS competency so difficult. It provides a proven methodology that you can use to diagnose your current state and guide your future actions - bring together the right mix of technology, governance content and people power. As an added bonus, this presentation is illustrated with real examples from Information Leadership’s own business – find out how they capture, manage and leverage their own knowledge.

About Information Leadership

Information Leadership is one of NZ's largest and most respected information and knowledge management consultancy. Having worked over the last five years with over 100 NZ and Australian organisations covering Education, Health, Science, Utilities, Engineering, Local and Central Government, Information Leadership brings together a unique blend of skills in information technologies, change management, records management and knowledge replication.

Grant Margison regularly consults for a range of clients in the public and corporate sectors. He assists organisations in making the right IT choices and helps engage entire organisations to ensure that IT projects succeed.
Grant has an engineering degree and diploma in business. While in senior management positions at Enerco, Southpower and Counties Power, Grant helped these companies to gain business advantage and service improvement through the successful use of new technologies.

He has developed information and IT strategies and products, mobile data implementations and asset management business planning. He is a regular conference speaker in NZ and overseas.

Knowledge Management in Europe - Current issues and practice

Knowledge Management is no longer a new buzz word in Europe, it is a well-established practice in organizations. This was reflected in the presentations at the 10th European Conference on Knowledge Management - there were many case studies and reports from existing practices; advances in familiar areas such as knowledge sharing and KM implementation; and new emerging topics and issues such as use of social networking tools in business and valuation of knowledge management initiatives.

Nelly Todorova has recently returned from attending the conference and will share some of the ideas and findings that were presented.

Bring your lunch, hear what Nelly has to say about the latest KM trends in Europe, and participate in what should be an interesting and engaging discussion.

Masterclass in SharePoint Collaboration & Governance with Michael Sampson

In this masterclass, collaboration and SharePoint guru Michael Sampson will take you through the steps required to make collaboration a success inside your organization.

Knowledge-based work, as we’re finally realising, is collaborative in nature. This is the primary reason we’re seeing a rush to implement collaboration applications inside the enterprise. But just installing an application does not mean that the magic we want will happen. It requires proper thinking, planning and governing to make collaboration work.

Michael Sampson is a Collaboration Strategist. He helps end-user organizations in New Zealand, Australia, the United States, Europe and other places around the world improve the performance of distributed teams.

Michael holds an MCom with first class honors in telecommunications-based IT, from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, and is working on his doctorate in collaborative applications and virtual teams. Michael lives in New Zealand with his glorious wife and nine children.

Michael is the author of the widely acclaimed books:

Seamless Teamwork: Using SharePoint for Collaboration (Microsoft Press)

SharePoint Roadmap for Collaboration (published by Michael Sampson)

To register go to:
Dr Jack Bacon - Futurist on The Parallel Bang: Non-Linear Thinking in a Non-Linear World

A Business After Five Session with presentation by Dr Jack Bacon. Jack will talk about the Parallel Bang and what it means for your organisation, our community, our society and our world. An optional dinner will follow Jack's presentation.

A 10% discount is available to NZKM members. Just mention NZKM when you register online at:
http://www.smartnet.co.nz/events/other/jackbacon.htm

Dr Jack Bacon is one of the world's most popular speakers on technology and the factors that shape human society. He is the author of three popular books; My Grandfathers' Clock, My Stepdaughter's Watch, and The Parallel Bang. His lectures have captivated tens of thousands of all ages in thirty-two countries on six continents. In his daily work, he is on the management team overseeing the construction and operation of the most complicated technical project in history: the International Space Station. More on Dr Jack Bacon.

What does the Parallel Bang mean to your organisation, our community, our society and our world?

World economics, work, education and leisure are being transformed before our very eyes.
In the last decade, we've tripled our knowledge of astronomy, pinpointed the age and size of the cosmos, counted its galaxies, and found the theory that will link all known physics of the universe. The patent rate has more than doubled. We've decoded out genome. We've doubled our life expectancy. We've changed the workforce and the workweek. We've engineered machines a few atoms in size. More than two thirds of the citizens of the western world are now linked to the Internet.

Futurist, technological historian and NASA engineer Dr Jack Bacon presents a compelling vision that human thought - which houses the parallel universe of all the models of the physical universe - is undergoing an explosive new phase of development not unlike the surge that occurred in the Renaissance. This time, however, it's taking less than a decade, and it's on an exponential trajectory that will take humanity to amazing new heights. In these few thousand days we're living through something of astounding significance as computing, communications, medicine, psychology, politics, transportation, agriculture, and world economics all "throw on the afterburners."
Fasten your seatbelt and prepare for the explosive growth of understanding in the 21st century.

With an increasing number of Official Information Act requests, it is vital for all government departments that your processes for responding to these requests are streamlined and effective. They must also be robust enough to respond to the most complex claims, being careful not to release information where there is reason to withhold and making decisions that will be able to withstand Ombudsmen scrutiny.

In addition to the demands created by the OIA, government departments and practitioners are also faced with challenges in the privacy field and in 2010 will be faced with the public records audit.

Practical application of Cognitive Edge methods in the Victorian Public Service

Monday March 9th, 12:30 - 1:30pm at Large Gallery room in Turnbull House (11 Bowen Street)

The NZKM Network is pleased to introduce Laurel Sutton to share her learning's, frustrations and insights on using Dave Snowden's Cognitive Edge methods at two recent workshops in Victoria.

The Victorian Public Service Continuous Improvement Network (VPSCIN) exists to encourage and promote continuous improvement thought leadership and practice, and in doing so help build a more effective and agile Public Sector. VPSCIN recently ran two workshops using the Cognitive Edge methods. One workshop mapped the issues related to engaging with the community on climate change and the other focused on innovation within the Victorian Public Service. The sessions were facilitated by a number of recently accredited practitioners in Cognitive Edge methods.

Laurel is hoping that the conversation with the NZKM Network will be a mutual learning experience. Laurel is a Project Manager with Victoria Police. Her background is within the mental health field as a clinician. This is augmented by post graduate qualifications in organisation behaviour which all comes together nicely in terms of a people focused approach in organisations.

Members free and non-members $10.

Please RSVP to treasurer@nzkm.net

FREE: How to create, develop and evolve a social media presence to increase collaboration, drive awareness and improve customer

Key Strategies for Successful Online Communities
How to create, develop and evolve a social media presence to increase collaboration, drive awareness and improve customer loyalty

Social networking and online communities have received significant attention in the past 12 months, as services such as Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn attract and connect communities of people. For organisations wanting to truly bring their marketing and customer service strategies into the 21st century, creating and fostering an online community can be the most powerful –not to mention the most cost effective – marketing tool available.

For marketers and communicators social media is proving effective at reinforcing an organisation’s brand, understanding and capturing customer feedback, and creating and sharing information across communities of interest. Organisations can take advantage of similar technologies to create their own custom community experiences.

According to Ullrich Loeffler, Program Manager Software at IDC, “Enterprises are interested in social media based on its ability to drive internal and external collaboration, information exposure and revenue acceleration while reducing marketing and operational costs.”

Recognising the importance of this trend, Intergen has invited Andreas Stjernström from Swedish enterprise software company EPiServer to New Zealand. He will highlight the reasons why developing a community is important, and give real world examples of organisations that have successfully created and maximised the benefits of online communities.

Intended as an introduction to online community development, these free events are targeted at:

Organisations that are currently creating or are looking to create or sponsor an online community.

Agencies who want to offer your customers options for taking advantage of social media.

Marketers and communicators who are looking for new mediums to communicate your organisation’s value proposition.

Events are scheduled on the following dates:

Wellington - Wednesday 5 November, Level 7, 126 Lambton Quay – 4.30pm-6pm

Christchurch - Thursday 6 November, Level 2, 158 Hereford Street, 8am – 9.30am

Auckland - Friday 7 November, Level 2, 15 Huron Street, Takapuna – 12.30pm – 2pm

To register for these free events, email events@intergen.co.nz
Finger food will be on offer at all sessions.

The August strategic intranet summit highlighted the challenges and great work being done with intranets in New Zealand. Dorje will provide a summary of the event, key themes and topics which excited discussion. He'll focus in particular on the way new technologies are facilitating information becoming knowledge, and on web 2.0 and social networks within the organisation.

An introduction: Hi, I'm Mike Riverdsale, who are you?

It was at an NZKM lunchtime catch-up here in Wellington that someone made a great observation - "Let's not dive into having formal agenda but start by getting to know each other" (I paraphrase).

And that person was totally onto it - without us actually knowing each other it's pretty tough to share ideas, have trust and get along. And so, this is me (source: my company site):

Mike Riversdale, a man for all seasons but certainly not a man of mystery living his electronic life on-line since 2002 generating a large on-line presence.

Mike (aka Miramar Mike) has been working in, with and against IT Departments from all types of organisations in all parts of the world for nearly 20 years as he follows his passion of connecting people to people with usable information, clear communication and on-line collaboration.

His company, MiramarMike.co.nz, concentrates on helping large organisations collaborate, smaller companies manage their information and SMEs/charitable agencies use the Google Apps product set.

He has completely removed the need to pay money for software and instead spends it on web features that help him write for notable NZ sites such as Groupings and Diversity. Catch his latest news at his company blog (subscribe ), the scatalogical personal blog or any of his social networking sites where he'll be your "friend", just ask.

I am also currently a member of the NZKM Committee and have a full and frank NZKM website profile (do you?)

And now you - who are you?

Wellington

LinkedIn NZKM group - please join up

We (you ever obedient committee) have created a LinkedIn Group (called New Zealand Knowledge Network) as a means of connecting with knowledge workers, getting the NZKM name out there and using the on-line networking you are probably already doing.

If you are already a member of LinkedIn then simply join the group: http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=157550

If you're not a member of LinkedIn and are wondering what it's all about - read on ...

This from Wikipedia:

LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site founded in December 2002 and launched in May 2003[2] mainly used for professional networking. As of December 2007, its site traffic was 3.2 million visitors per month, up 485% from the end of 2006.[3] As of May 2008, it had more than 24 million registered users,[4] spanning 150 industries.

David Gurteen at Education Leaders Forum (Christchurch)

David plans to be in New Zealand from about the 18th to 25th of October as part of a more extensive visit to Australia and Singapore.

The main reason for his trip to New Zealand is to take part in the Education Leaders Forum in Christchurch on 22-23 October. It looks a great event (more after the break ...)

The Education Leaders Forum 08 (ELF 08) will build on last year's inaugural Forum, a ground-breaking event for key people from across the education and training spectrum.

ELF 07 explored how different parts of the learning system can better collaborate and be more responsive to changing needs in a	world where new media have shrunk physical distance and transformed the	way people learn, work and play.

Participants in ELF 08 will gain fresh perspectives in a stunning high country setting. A web-based forum enables continuing dialogue.

So if this is of interest please consider registering.

Lyall Lukey is David's host in New Zealand and is arranging other meetings and events for him in Wellington and Auckland. He will let you know of his schedule once it firms up but he still have free time and he is available for in-house work such as consulting, talks or knowledge cafes or simply meeting for coffee, lunch or dinner. If you are interested, he would love to hear from you.

Regards David

David Gurteen
Knowledge Management within Customer Services – could SharePoint be your enabler?

This month's NZKM event is in partnership with the Sharepoint User Group.

With customers changing expectations of service and the different ways they want to interact with organisations it is important to understand where your knowledge resides. The multi channel and 24hr world creates new demands on your organisation, therefore effectively managing the customer lifecycle within this dynamic environment is crucial to a successful business.

The ability to deliver effective customer service and lifecycle management relies on your Knowledge Management strategy. A Knowledge Management strategy should mutually co-exist with your IT, HR and Operations strategy. This session will look at Knowledge Management theory and principles, focussing specifically on how IT in particular, can be an enabler of Knowledge Management. These principles will then be related to functionality provided by SharePoint or various add ons within the context of customer service.

Presented by: Mark Ginnever, Business Development Manager, Intergen Limited

The event starts with drinks/pizza at 5.30, with the talk commencing at 6pm.

To assist with catering arrangements, please register for this event.

Ian Anderson on 'Policies & Procedures are critical knowledge assets that need special treatment'

Different categories of knowledge assets need different rules for drafting, approvals, publishing, and version management. Policies & Procedures are different from other knowledge assets in that they affect all parts of the business, are referred to frequently by many staff, must be clear, accurate, and up-to-date at all times, and are often a web of inter-related documents. Ian Anderson from Streamliners NZ Limited (www.streamliners.co.nz) will discuss how Canterbury businesses have improved the effectiveness of their policies and procedures through technical writing services and single-sourcing publishing techniques.
