NZKM KNOWLEDGE UPDATE : SEPTEMBER 2008
FROM THE EDITOR
It hardly seems possible that we are over halfway through 2008. So far it has proved to be a busy one, and with an election looming there is no sign of things slowing down.
The NZKM AGM held in July was well attended. Guest speaker, Dave Snowden, provided food for thought and provoked interesting discussion on KM and its future. We welcomed two new volunteers, Mike Riversdale and Anita Rapson to the Management Committee, and farewelled Diane Edwards and Alistair Gibbons. The hard work put into the website has finally come to fruition and you will notice several new features over the coming months.
We continue to hold a range of events in the main centres and are pleased to announce that David Gurteen will be in New Zealand in late October. Further details will be available on the NZKM website shortly.
Don’t forget to send us your ideas and feedback. Look forward to seeing you at an NZKM event near you.

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK
NZKM exists because there is an active community of KM practitioners, academics and thinkers who are passionate and committed to growing awareness and benefit from KM.
Over the past year, we have been focussing on developing our website capability to provide more value to members – much of this work is now complete and is in the process of being rolled out. Now it’s your turn....We want to know what you want to see more of, less of, and things we can improve on. So, we’ve compiled a short survey where you get to have your say. You can do this by clicking on the link below or pasting into your browser.

MEET THE NZKM COMMITTEE
Mike Riversdale, is NZKM’s resident ‘on line wrangler’. Mike joined the Management Committee in 2008 to bring his expertise and enthusiasm into helping to create a vibrant and active NZKM online community. His first task is encouraging us all to submit an online profile.
Mike is a man for all seasons but certainly not a man of mystery living his electronic life on-line since 2002 generating a large on-line presence.
He has been working in, with and against IT Departments from all types of organisations in all parts of the world for nearly 20 years as he follows his passion of connecting people to people with usable information, clear communication and on-line collaboration.
His company, MiramarMike.co.nz, concentrates on helping large organisations collaborate, smaller companies manage their information and SMEs/charitable agencies use the Google Apps product set.

Developing Knowledge-Based Client Relationships, 2nd Ed.

The Competitive Imperative of Learning (Amy Edmondson, Harvard Business Review, Jul/Aug 2008)
Most executives believe that relentless execution -- efficient, timely, consistent production and delivery of goods or services -- is the surefire path to customer satisfaction and positive financial results. But this is a myth in the knowledge economy, argues Edmondson, a Harvard Business School professor. Edmondson uses well known cases to demonstrate her belief that execution as efficiency models result in employees reluctant to voice opinions and ideas that ultimately impacts on the ability of the organisation to improve and evolve.
Don’t Just Capture Knowledge—Put it to Work. (K Pugh, N Dixon, Harvard Business Review, May 2008)
This article refers to the systematic collection and circulation of knowledge in an organization as a knowledge harvest and reports on a method of knowledge harvesting that was developed by Intel Solution Services (ISS), the information-technology consulting unit of Intel. Making knowledge more productive starts with identifying the knowledge seekers and getting them involved in gathering information. The example is the ISS health-care-consulting team's Future Hospital program in Germany where Wi-Fi innovations improved the marketing department's effectiveness.
